Weight stigma refers to the discrimination towards individuals due to their body shape and size.

Weight stigma is rife in the health care system, with health care professionals attached to outdated beliefs that weight is an indicator of health. Often we will be weighed in a GP office before (if ever) we are asked whether we smoke like a chimney or drink like a fish.

Weight and size do not determine health.
BMI was NEVER developed to be used as an assessment tool on individuals.
Fat does not equal sick.

You can be thin with high cholesterol or fat with high cholesterol. You can be fit and fat or unfit and thin. Body size is not a determinant of health.

Weight stigma and fat shaming rarely results in positive outcomes, instead they are associated with increased depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. To avoid weight stigma, individuals at times choose not to see a health care professional as often as needed for fear of being judged and scrutinised.

No matter your weight, shape, size, health care should be equally accessible, respectful and evidence-based.

Health can be improved INDEPENDENTLY of weight… let it go!
